What are some simple things people can do to protect themselves online?

So yesterday was the official Safer internet day. I wanted to talk about this topic as it is very important. If you don’t watch what you share, you can risk that your content is used by others. For example pictures, you upload to Facebook can be used in commercials by other company’s. When you upload a picture or write a piece of text, you do not own it anymore.

Terms of service.  Who bothers to read those? They are so long and use a lot of difficult words. People nowadays just click accept automatically. I wouldn’t tell you to read all of it, but when you install or get something for free on the internet, you should.

Another thing you should do is to disable your location. People can easily track you, which is both dangerous and creepy. One thing in particular which is dangerous in relation to this is using public wifi’s. They can search through a lot of information on your device and get personal information about you and your friends. There are also a lot of applications to use if you don’t want company’s to get a hold of your pictures.

I would also recommend that you always report or tell someone when you discover cyberbullying. On social medias, there are always a report button and moderators that you can warn. The same goes for video games as you should report and warn a moderator. That will not only make it a more comfortable environment for you but also others.

So in short here are the things to remember: You do not own your pictures after uploading them, read some of the terms of service, disable your location, use apps to protecting your personal information, report cyberbullying. And one last thing! Be careful with what you tell and send strangers from the internet!

Happy Safe information day!!!
